Richard is a prolific, award-winning novelist whose works have been published in 23 languages and have been bestsellers in more than a dozen countries, including UK, France, Italy, Brazil, USA, Australia and Portugal. Born in in New York, Richard moved to Porto in 1990. Among his best-known novels are The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon, The Incandescent Threads (a n° 1 bestseller in Portugal), The Gospel According to Lazarus (lauded by the Sunday Times as one of the Books of the Year), and Hunting Midnight (which takes place in Porto in the 19th century).
A Beleza das Coisas Imperfeitas, the first book in Richard’s new trilogy, came out this september. He has also written six children's books in Portuguese. In July 2017, the city of Porto awarded Richard its highest distinction, the Medal of Honor. At the ceremony, then-mayor Rui Moreira described him as, "A citizen of Porto who was born far away, who makes Porto greater and grander... Zimler projects the city of Porto out into the world and brings the rest of the world to us."
