Maria BC (they/them), an Ohio-born artist now based in Oakland, California, has gradually opened up their creative process over the years. From the intimate, one-room recordings of the 2021 EP Devil’s Rain, made carefully so as not to disturb roommates or neighbours, to the untreated apartment sessions that became Hyaline (2022, Father/Daughter Records), and later to the home of a family friend where an out-of-tune baby Steinway piano became the starting point for Spike Field, their debut for Sacred Bones Records..

Released in 2022, Hyaline emerged as one of the year's standout ambient folk records, with haunting songs that felt as though they had drifted from the heart of a mystical, cobweb-covered attic. On Spike Field, Maria BC expanded that sonic language into more finely crafted territory, further establishing a singular artistic voice. Strings, fingerpicked guitars and shimmering textures surround their classically trained mezzo-soprano, creating arrangements that are denser and more kaleidoscopic than anything in their previous work. Maria BC describes this approach as "filling out the sonic space", building on the intimacy of Hyaline through liberated instrumental embellishments.

In 2026, Maria BC returns with Marathon, their third studio album and second release for Sacred Bones Records. Born from a sense of urgency, masochistic determination and endurance, the record reflects on what it means to keep moving forward—whether in resistance or simply in the act of surviving. Throughout Marathon, Maria BC explores themes of resistance, environmental collapse, personal upheaval and destruction, weaving them together through a musical language defined by grit, tension and perseverance.
