MARTINA BERTONI
Martina Bertoni is a Berlin-based experimental cellist and composer whose work “dissolves the boundaries between emotion and architecture, crafting soundscapes where control and resonance become fluid entities” (A Closer Listen). Bridging classical rigor with avant-garde exploration, her practice spans electro-acoustic composition, generative systems, and drone minimalism, interrogating sound’s capacity to reshape spatial and temporal perception. Central to her research is the use of timelessness as a compositional framework. Her discography includes Music for Empty Flats (Karlrecords, 2021), Hypnagogia (2023), a study in “haunted minimalism” (Boomkat) and Electroacoustic Works for Halldorophone (2025), which furthers her inquiry into destabilized tunings and generative systems. Beyond her artistic practice, Martina’s cello and original works have been featured in numerous soundtracks for films, series, and documentaries. She is currently a Lecturer for the Electronic Music Production & Performance and for the Creative Audio Practice & Sound Engineering Programs at Catalyst Institute for Creative Arts and Technology in Berlin.
Electroacoustic Works for Halldorophone: This electroacoustic set for laptop and electronics, emerges from Martina’s research on tuning systems and generative composition using the Halldorophone, conducted during her residency at Elektronmusikstudionin Stockholm in November 2023 and recently released as a double LP (Electroacoustic Works for Halldorophone, Karlrecords 2025). Rooted in her explorations on the instrument, this performance showcases compositions generated on Halldorophone and Computer. Using tetraphonic scales and tuned feedbacks, informed by generative systems and audio processing, Martina creates an interplay of harmonic frequencies, that morph into evolving, immersive soundscapes. Blurring the lines between control and chaos, her music unfolds as an exploration of time, tuning, and perception. From subtle, almost ambient beginnings, the performance crescendos into vast, resonant sound architectures, balancing restraint with overwhelming emotional force. Each moment invites listeners to navigate the interplay of simplicity and complexity, intimacy and grandeur.
Electroacoustic Works for Halldorophone fuses algorithmic precision with organic unpredictability. The result is a transformative auditory experience, that demands full attention and offers a profound engagement with the liminal spaces of sound and emotion.
