Superfan is the songwriting veil of Kali Priya Flanagan, Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist and producer. Initially imagined as a solo act, ambitious string arrangements crafted with cellist Omeed Almassi have come to define Superfan's noisy and magnetic pop soundscape. Having just signed with London-based label AD 93 (Joanne Robertson, YHWH Nailgun, Dagmar Zuniga), Superfan is set to release the sophomore album "My Piledriver Heart", the ten-track follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2024 debut "Tow Truck Jesus".
Where the debut captured the raw immediacy of Kali's transition in direct, deeply personal terms, "My Piledriver Heart" is a mature and melancholic record, exploring the interpersonal and intrapersonal from the vantage point of a man no longer in transition. With newfound security and unencumbered vision, Kali trades literalism for fragmented, impressionistic lyricism, channeling love-torn ballads through obscured imagery and literary fluency. "I wanted to write a record about love, not by looking inward but by looking outward, now that I was relating to people from a more secure sense of self and identity," says Kali.
The album marks the birth of "Acousticello", the live collaboration between Flanagan and Almassi. Kali performs all instrumentation minus the cello, built around his signature acoustic guitar, doomily tuned down as a nod to his Indian heritage and to instruments like the sitar and the vina. Recorded with co-producer Hudson Pollock in a windowless basement studio called Chateau Hardware, the duo slammed their acoustic instruments until they chugged noisily past boundaries.
Superfan has opened for The Strokes at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, via direct invitation from superfan Julian Casablancas, and has shared stages with Quiet Light, Kath Bloom, Horsegirl, Zoh Amba and many more.
